The fabric your team wears affects everything — comfort, durability, weight, and how long your colours stay vibrant. Understanding the materials behind custom sports uniforms helps you make the right choice for your sport, your climate, and your budget.
Polyester: The Teamwear Workhorse
Polyester is the foundation of most performance sportswear, and for good reason. It's lightweight, durable, and naturally moisture-wicking — pulling sweat away from the skin so players stay cool. Polyester also holds sublimation dye beautifully, which is why it's the default fabric for custom sublimated uniforms. If you're not sure where to start, polyester is almost always the right answer.
Polyester Blends
Blends combine polyester with other fibres — often elastane (spandex) — to add stretch. A small percentage of elastane (typically 5-10%) gives the fabric give, which matters for sports with a lot of movement and contact like rugby. Blends retain the moisture-wicking and sublimation-friendly properties of polyester while feeling more flexible. If your sport involves stretching, reaching, or tackling, a blend is worth the upgrade.
Mesh Panels for Ventilation
Many performance uniforms incorporate mesh panels in high-heat zones — underarms, sides, and back — to increase airflow. Mesh isn't a standalone fabric but a structural choice: it's the same base material with a more open weave. For teams playing in hot or humid conditions, ventilation makes a noticeable difference in comfort over 80 minutes.
What About Cotton?
Cotton is comfortable and familiar, but it absorbs moisture rather than wicking it. A soaked cotton shirt gets heavy, clings, and takes a long time to dry — not ideal for performance sport. Cotton does have a place in teamwear, though: sideline pieces like hoodies and clubhouse wear, where comfort matters more than moisture management. For anything worn during play, choose a performance fabric.
Fabric Weight
Fabric weight, measured in grams per square metre (GSM), affects how a garment feels and performs:
- Lightweight (140-160 GSM): ideal for hot climates and high-intensity sport
- Mid-weight (160-200 GSM): the versatile sweet spot for most team sports
- Heavyweight (200+ GSM): durable and structured, good for contact sports and colder conditions
Making the Right Choice
When you design a custom uniform with Impact Teamwear, our standard fabric is a performance polyester that's ideal for most teams. If you need something specific — a stretch blend for a contact sport, lightweight mesh for a hot climate, or a heavier fabric for durability — talk to our team. We source a range of fabrics from our Hong Kong production facility and can recommend the right option for your sport and conditions.
